Transforming Wednesday Wobbles to a Mid-Week Reset
Introduction
Wednesdays often get a bad rap. They’re dubbed “Hump Day,” implying that the week is a grind that we need to push through until the weekend. But what if we flipped that mindset? Instead of seeing Wednesday as an obstacle, what if we viewed it as a opportunity to reset, refocus, and re-energise?
That’s exactly what I started doing, and it’s made a world of difference in how I approach the rest of the week. By shifting my mindset and using Brian Tracy’s ABCDE method, I’ve turned Wednesday wobbles into a mid-week power-up. It’s a chance to re-evaluate how the week is going, identify what I need to accomplish, and prioritise my tasks with clarity and confidence.
Why Wednesdays Are Perfect for a Reset
Wednesdays are unique. They sit right in the middle of the week, offering a perfect moment to pause and take stock. Rather than seeing it as a hurdle, I’ve found that it’s the ideal time to check in with myself: Am I on track with my goals? What’s been going well, and what needs more attention?
By taking a moment to reset, you’re not just coasting through the week—you’re actively steering it in the direction you want to go. And that’s where the ABCDE method comes in. This simple yet powerful tool has helped me take control of my Wednesdays (and the rest of my week) by ensuring I’m focused on what truly matters.
The ABCDE Method: A Practical Guide
The ABCDE method, created by Brian Tracy, is all about prioritisation. It’s designed to help you organise your tasks based on their importance and urgency, so you’re working smarter, not harder. Here’s how I use it every Wednesday to reset my week:
- I start by spending approximately 10 minutes doing a brain dump of everything I have going on in my head, all the items and tasks I know I need to get done, I write down on a piece of paper or in a Google Doc.
- I then spend another 10 minutes using the ABCDE method below to prioritise those tasks/to-do items.
- I look at the A items and prioritise those, keeping in mind the question, "what will move me, my business or my life forward the most, what will have the biggest impact if I complete".
- I then take some time to identify what the first step to get started is. Sometimes a task looks and feels too big and so I've found breaking it down into smaller chunks and crucially what the first step to take is, has been really helpful.
-
A (Must Do): These are the tasks that are critical—non-negotiables that absolutely must be done. If left unfinished, they’ll have significant consequences. On a Wednesday, I review my A tasks to ensure that I’m on track with my most important goals. These might include client work, crucial meetings, or deadlines.
-
B (Should Do): These tasks are important but not as critical as the A tasks. There might be some negative impact if they’re not completed, but nothing major. Wednesdays are a great day to tackle these tasks, as it’s a productive day to catch up on things like follow-up emails or planning for the next week.
-
C (Nice to Do): These are the tasks that are more about adding value or enjoyment rather than driving key results. On Wednesdays, I look at these tasks as potential mood boosters—things like organising my workspace or reading up on personal development. They’re not essential, but they make the day more enjoyable.
-
D (Delegate): These are tasks that can be handed off to someone else. Mid-week is a perfect time to evaluate what’s on your plate that could be delegated. This frees up your time for the A tasks that really need your focus.
-
E (Eliminate): These are the tasks that don’t need to be done at all. By Wednesday, I can often see which tasks are simply distractions or time-wasters. Eliminating them gives me more mental space to focus on what’s truly important.
How This Method Transforms Wednesdays
Using the ABCDE method on a Wednesday gives me a clear roadmap for the rest of the week. It helps me refocus on what’s most important, reduces overwhelm, and allows me to approach the rest of the week with renewed energy. Instead of feeling like I’m just trying to get over a “hump,” I feel empowered to make the most of the days ahead.
This method not only helps me prioritise my tasks but also shifts my mindset from one of survival to one of taking control. By consciously choosing to reset on Wednesday, I’m setting myself up for a productive week.
